| Synopsis: | An disenchanted artist meets the girlfriend (Emmanuelle Beart) of a photographer through a mutual art dealer friend. The photographer and art dealer persuade the artist to continue his final masterpiece "La Belle Noiseuse" (The Beautiful Troublemaker) using EB as the model (previously he used his now ageing wife). EB is cross not to have been consulted but goes anyway. The photographer becomes jealous as the days go by as does the artists wife. The artist however believes that the masterpiece can only come out of suffering and as such puts both himself and his model (EB) through hell to achieve it, the jealousy of the other two only effecting the masterpiece towards the end. This is an in depth study of one nude painting's creation, and of those that contribute to its creation. | |
| Review: | La Belle Noiseuse, like most of these films has won numerous awards, the surprising thing is that it is both incredibly long and features a large amount of nudity. I will explain that Emmanuelle is an Artist's Model and the film studies how he draws and creates his Masterpiece to end all Masterpieces, there is a very nice twist at the end so do watch the whole thing (all 4 hours). If you like art then this will probably interest you if not then I warn you the plot is quite thin because it has been stretched from a 20 min film to fit a 4 hour one, or at least that is what it feels like and I do make short films. There is a two hour cut available on video, which is much better plot wise but you lose a lot of the tensions that build up in the longer one (not to mention the gratuitous nudity). Watching this film again recently I feel I have to mention that there is an incredible amount of tension built up during the film, the way the characters all have different motives and jealousy. Whether she is the beautiful trouble maker (the name of the masterpiece he paints) seems to be clear until you realise it is the painter all along who has caused the whole situation. I like this film very much because of the raw passions it portrays and invokes. I do not recommend it until you have seen some of the others though, you may not appreciate why it is as brilliant as they thought it was at Cannes. | |
| Rating: 7/10 It helps if you either like Emmanuelle or Art, it is a bit to long otherwise. |
